I do have a love /hate relationship with Tesco but the local shops are at least 30% more expensive and it is cost effective to make the trip once a month. This is a fact of life in most rural areas and I am not really wingeing as I knew the score before moving. Of course the upside is access to local veg during the summer as well as eggs & fish.

Food that might not necessarily look as 'pretty' as the stuff in supermarkets, but boy does it taste like it should! One of the nicest things about my two years living in Kerry when I first moved back here was getting the funky-shaped carrots from the Maharees. Also, when my parents were alive, home was Kinsale in County Cork. Catch of the day from pier to plate in less than an hour. Scrumptious! The Crofter wrote:... access to local veg during the summer as well as eggs & fish.

Yeah Áine, home grown / fresh caught etc is brilliant.
In my aim to get more self sufficient, one part is a great vegie patch.
All of it is incredible in taste, tomatoes for example are all 'meat' hardly any seed, and wow, the taste !
gerogeh, yes although water is bacially an ever recycling product, it seems to be changing in where and when it falls.
Most notably here in Australia, it seems the southern half is experiencing much less, while northern more tropical climes and eastern states are getting more than their share of the 'wet'.
Here in Adelaide, we are into our 15th day over 35 deg C, an official national record heatwave was at 9 days. We've had a fair amount of 35 - 40 deg C days in that, and no rain for approaching 2-1/2 months !
Re Peak Oil, we are fast running out of time to consider alternatives, as all of these are dependent on fossil fuels to produce. If the govcos of the world ignore it any longer, we won't have the resources, or they'll cost way more than now, to be able the make the alternatives ! Frustrating !
I am sure we'll know when PO hits properly, prices will go up $pl instead of cpl ($/c per litre).
The oil companies have perpetuated perhaps the best cover up in the history of the world with this.
I can understand (the inexcusable) govcos protecting a major revenue from taxes on these products too, but what is the medias excuse ?
Do they just believe it if the oil barons / companies and govco tell them PO is all a bunch of hogwash ?
Actually in recent time the US govco has acknowledged PO and what is approaching, but what have they done about it ?
Besides trying to maintain their supplies via various 'means'.
Bush has said the US MUST change their ways and high dependence / use of oil.

Agree with you on the fresh produce Aine, that for me is one of the greatest benefits of living in Sarawak,in Sibu, where I live there is a huge farmers market in the centre of town which sells everything fresh, fruit, veg, fish, meat poultry, one of my favourite fruits there is the local green oranges, they look awful and are generally covered in black blemishes( which to me prove they are not full of chemicals) but are absolutely delicious.
Re the water issue, there are a number of factors which are a real concern at the momment, the world bank reports that there are 80 countries worldwide which have insufficient water supply, climate change, increase in world population, intensive farming, pollution are all issues which are putting strain on the supply of potable water.

Pleeeeease
When I was living in Kerry, I had the misfortune to be driving past a farm where they were spraying the fields. I actually felt pity for the insects (not my greatest favourites of God's creatures). Whatever it was, I don't think its residue would be any good for creatures our size either!

First lot were fab - some great trips down memory lane, Prospero!
Yah boo sucks to the smart kid, Nokia need to apologise, and I've been reminded that there's a huge Steve Hackett hole in my music collection. Talking of which....
And while on acoustic classics, howzabout this and this? And one just has to include some Gilmour.
(Would also have included "Goodbye Blue Sky" but the Scarfe animations on the YouTube clips might be too graphic for some people.)
