butimum

Yes, the material is soft. I do not have any real answer other than an overglaze of polyurathane or equiv. I do not like the way the overglazes look - my top coats are generally paste wax or shellac. My hand made frames always have a caution - "do not clean with anything wet - dust with a duste...

Victorian toner

We call the material Asphaltium (asphalt) on this side of the pond.

Powdered form can be found in shops catering to print makers (Intaglio) It is the same stuff that is used to tar roofs and pave roads.

Or get some (liquid) from a home center.

simply thin with mineral spirits (paint thinner)

rabbitspace

I have used Rabbitspace for many years. It is a fine product. As an alternative for a heavy project, the old standby of wood buildups around the opening also work (with a beveled back edge and painted a dark color).

although an airline ticket might be totally different, we are fairly close (industry to industry) to the commercial art / advertising arena. Printers, photographers, photo labs. commercial art studios all charge substancial "up charges" for speedy service beyond their normal delivery cycle...

I was suggesting a barrior of the Mylar and the original mount....... not a second mount and the mylar below the original mount.

acid mount

The answer is no.

The contanimation will pass right through the bottom mount.

To be realistic, a layer of Milinex (Mylar) would offer more protection than a cotton or alpha cellulose board , but not total protection.

hand cutting mounts

My favorite hand mount cutter is old Dexter cutter..........it is chrome plated and has a big base that fits the hand. For small tight cutting (carving) I like the "cube" that used to be made be Dahl. BTY when I started I had an "old timer" who used a mat knife and a steel straig...

hand mount cutte

Patrick, Can you please explain what you need...... Are you doing and oversized mount and are doing straight lines... Or are you doing decorative design cutouts. If it is oversized straight cuts. I disassemble one of my 3 cutters and clamp the machined bar with the sliding cutter head to the table (...

It's guessing on my part, but I suspect that Mylar and Melinex may just be two different trade names for much the same polymer.

Yes and made by the same company........ Dupont USA (discontinued) Dupont Europe (Melinex)

glass thickness

Most US framers use either 2mm or 2.2mm glass. That latter is called SSB in the industry. I personnaly do not use 2mm over the size of 22 x 28. There is one picture framing glass source (General) that sells the 2mm through 36 x 48 and possibly through 40 x 60 (not sure). I will use the 2.2mm in size...

hinges

You did not exactly say how heavy the paper art is. If you are not sure that 2 hinges will do, 3 - 4 can also be used along the top. If any side or bottom hinges are used, they are to be used only for positioning and not support. Here is a link to some instructions and diagrams. http://www.frametek....

US vs European pricing

I had a young lady from France come into the shop a couple of days ago. She has a stretched oul painting 16" x 22 3/4"(406mm x 578mm). She selected a basic gold color frame1 1/2" wide (factory finish metal leaf). I quoted her $107US (90euros). She was horrorified as to the quote (way ...

It looks like the artist == I. Tarkay ... from Isreal His popularity has wained somewhat. There are several other artists that copy his style. Art is available as open edition prints, limited editions and original acrylic paintings.

this link will show you how to make and use paper hinges. The use of home cooked wheat/rice paste or what they sell does not change the process.

frames prints without a mount

A fillet such as Fremespace® is used. This will keep an air space between the glass and the image. http://www.frametek.com/ As far as the hinges............ pre adhesived tapes are not true conservation, no matter what the manufactures says or writes. Either wheat paste and mulberry hinges (or equiv...
