Re: West Coast Art and Frame show - USA
The main attraction the WCAF has for me is the classes, as while the trade floor is worth spending some time on, generally we cannot buy from the suppliers there as Ireland is well out of their territory. So just spending a few short trips to the trade area, maybee totalling less than 3 hours, the r...

Re: Separate Workshop to Retail Unit
Interesting topic !!... Having two locations may well work for some, but Prospero's points are very valid. By this stage, we have operated all three formats , so we understand the pros and cons to be as follows; 1> In town, retail and workshop combined. This will work best if the framing business ex...

Re: charnwood mitre guillotine
I don't know much about other makes of Guillotine , but.... I doubt any other make has the proven track record of the sturdy Morsos....and... there is a great advantage in having two identical machines as you can then share parts and blades especially. We run two Morsos and having a common pool of b...

Re: Sealing a wood frame for use outdoors
Just to complete the story ! We put up the before and after photos on Facebook asking for a suitable caption. We then selected 6 captions from those received and put those six up on Facebook again asking people to "vote " on their favourite. We closed it off at noon today and the winner wa...

Re: Sealing a wood frame for use outdoors
As this is part of an arts project and the frame is in a public place , we are trying to maximise the awareness of this framing project and our involvement with it .....so we posted a few photos on our Facebook page and yesterday launched a competition where we posted the "before" and &quo...

Completed Framed
After a lot of work last week , applying 3 coats of Yacht Varnish to front / back and ends of each of the 10 pieces of moulding (and waiting over 24 hours between coats ) we were happy to get it installed today. Tomorrow , we plan on mounting a plaque beside it to take the credit ! dublin street fra...

Re: Sealing a wood frame for use outdoors
Many Thanks for your responses above. I've bought some good quality clear yacht varnish this morning that I will try out....it recommends applying 3 coats , with 24 hours interval between coats, so that is going to take a while. Combining the two mouldings, creates something chunky and means that I ...

Sealing a wood frame for use outdoors
We have been asked to put a frame around a piece of art that was painted on the front of a vacant high street shop unit. It is quite large at about 26' x 11'...and was painted directly on white coloured plywood sheeting. It has survived since last summer , so we are now planning on putting a frame o...

Metal Leaf Gilding......supplies ?
We are having a go at doing some gold metal leaf gilding and have got some initial bits and pieces from Lion. I have recently got Marty Horowitz's book on "an introduction to Water Gilding" in which metal leaf gilding is covered.......In it they refer to Casein paints , various shellacs , ...

Picture Framing at the Spring Fair ?
I made the trip over and back yesterday. Firstly, thanks to John Cooper who did his magic for me on a few small oval mounts that I needed. We never did get our Valiani CMC successfully cutting 3.5mm thick mountboard and so, as I desperately needed these , I brought along the few blank pieces of board...

I think Kev,s response above is spot on. If you can, I think its most important to hire for attitude then train for skills In any case, its a very important element in your business...as It is by far the highest cost for such a labour intensive business ....much higher cost than any machine we might...

Re: Outlook for the new financial year (2013-14)
At the beginning of any year it can be difficult to guess what any of us will have achieved by the year end. We can’t predict the future, but we certainly need to make some plans to attempt to achieve our goals, whatever they may be….without a plan , we only have hope ( which is neither a plan or a ...

Just another twist on Metal Plaques
Just another twist on Metal Plaques metal plate.jpg This is certainly not for everyone, but it may be of interest to some of you. Up to about 6 months ago, we were having our brass plaques done by a local jeweller. This was fine , but we were almost reluctantly offering them as they were a bit of ha...
