gummed tape vs self adhesive tape

Post by muffinski »

what methods are people using, gummed tape that needs wetting or self adhesive or any other method? I have been finding there is quite a difference in the quality of tapes out there. Has anyone used this:

I take it you mean sealing the backs of frames... gummed tape for me every time  I just wet mine with a sponge and tray of water. I settled on the Arqadia tape as it seems a better quality than others I've tried. Any job I've had in for re-framing that's got sticky brown on the back is either so gooey or just falls off (in other words it has failed), I've never liked the stuff. Removing gummed tape does require re-wetting it, but it always comes off nice and clean :D

I also think it just looks better... we all know how important it is for the backs to look good right!? My missus laughs at me when I show a customer a frame... she reckons that I've actually shown the back of the frame first

Sekisui tape for me. Self adhesive and sticks to itself. I get neat backs with it.

Years ago I bought a one-armed-bandit type gumstrip dispenser.
It cost a fair wedge but it's more than earned it's keep.

I almost exclusively use 4" gumstrip. Bear in mind that I always paper the entire backs of frames.
The backs of hand-finished frames can be very unsightly. Even more so if they are stacked. A covering
of gumstrip covers a multitude of sins. I've used up to 3 strips per side on wide frames so using 2" wide
s/a tape would be very expensive for me.
I also dislike the s/a stuff because after a few years it starts to deteriorate and peel off. Some quicker than
others, but the good old licky-sticky lasts.
The only time I do use s/a is on the backs of stand-up frames where the back is more visible. I use the
black stuff from Lion. Very sparingly :? It's not cheap but it looks good and lasts a fair while.

If I could get wet black tape I would be a happy camper. :ninja:

We use gummed tape, we've got a dispenser from Lions that we use most of the time, but on the extra wide it is a pot of water and a brush. We used to use self adhesive tape on everything and were a bit messy when we first switched over, but after LOTS of practice we actually much prefer using gummed tape now and also prefer how it looks. But like all these things, it is a much down to personal preference as anything else.

We still have self adhesive tape that we can use on Polcore style mouldings on the rare occasions we use them because the gummed tape won't stick to that.

Gummed here too - easy to shape in to the rebate when wet and far cheaper than even the cheapest s/adhesive. We do keep a roll of s/adhesive for stuff the gummed won't stick to such as plastic and some woodeden mouldings that are gessoed on the back - you can rough them up with sandpaper but that just makes the flumb pervert happy.

For posh jobs, especially when using correx backs, we use Lineco foil tape, or the PEL equivalent.

The self adhesive tape we use, we buy from Stix2, which is the craft side of UK Industrial tapes, so we are buying it for re-sale. When I need a new roll I just don my apron with the false pocket and do a bit of shoplifting.

With the sekisui Lion and wessex seem to stock different versions. One has blue text inside the roll one has orange text. Currently got roles of both on the go and obviously my mind has gone blank to which I prefer. :head:

If you like sakasui then if you by in bulk it is a fraction of what wessex and lion charge.

Grays, IFGL, do you use the blue or orange, or is there a third option?

I use the orange which is the sekasui 500 as per my link. The 504 has a non slip coating which can be written on but both stick to themselves.

So am I right in thinking that general consensus is that gummed vs normal self adhesive is better in that it will last longer stuck down. However, does Sekisui exceed or at least match gummed?
