I recently bought a morso guillotine, I'm having a few head scratchers
when I release the pedal the moulding at times lifts with the blades
is this normal? I thought of a bit of wd40 on the blades?
also cant make sense of the measuring scale any advice most welcome?

Re: morso teething problems
Before lifting the pedal, with the blades still in the down / cutting position, move the blade positioning handle back a notch or two so the blades move back away from the moulding then raise the foot pedal.

Hi Red, yes this can happen but don't put WD40 on your blades as it will end up on your moulding! Just before you allow the blades to rise back up, nudge the head back a touch then bring the blades up, forward, down, back and up. Some call this the morso dance!

The measuring scale is quite simple but can be baffling to the initiates.
The width of the moulding at the back (not including the rebate lip) x2 is the amount that needs to be added to make it fit.
If you imagine the end of a 45º mitred piece, it is an isosceles triangle. The cut face is the hypotenuse. The other sides are equal.
So if the width is 40mm and you want the inside to be say, 502mm you need to add 80mm. The moulding having two ends.
This may seem blindingly obvious, but it's surprisingly easy to forget.
The scale on the sliding part is doubled. So you set 40mm on the slide scale (which is in fact 80mm) to correspond with 502 on the fixed scale.
So you are actually cutting a piece 582mm long which should fit as it will be 502mm along the rebate.
Easy init?
As for the blades binding on retraction, if you keep your hands wrapped firmly around the ends of the clear guards on the fences
you can hold the moulding down while lifting your foot up. Also ensures your fingers are not near the blades.
If you don't allow the moulding to lift then often the blades will slide out smoothly. But most folks (inc myself) have got into David's Morso boogie.

Re: morso teething problems
To use the morso scales:
1. Use the vertical scale to measure the width of the back of the moulding. Example shown is 45mm wide.
2. Use the 45mm point on the sliding rule to measure the length you want to cut on the fixed rule. Example shown is 60cm long.
Hope that makes sense?
