How to protect pure gesso finish?
Hi
Just wondering amongst you hand finishers how you leave frames which are just pure gesso?
I usually leave them uncoated after having sanded then polish to smooth finish BUT feel they need a coat of something on them...
Have tried wax but leaves streaky marks.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your advice.
James

Gesso has a porous surface - the better to take finishes. But left raw it will absorb all the airborne pollutants not to mention fingermarks and such and soon look manky. It needs sealing with something. You could paint it with white acrylic (Might need to mix up the right tone as Titanium white is brighter than the gesso shade). Or you could try spraying with satin picture varnish.

Re: How to protect pure gesso finish?
Thanks prospero
I have tried acrylic paint on top but it looses the marble like finish and only possible to achieve complete smoothness by spraying not brushing.
The idea of satin varnish I like & will experiment with.
So right it does pick up finger marks and stains easily.
Thanks

Re: How to protect pure gesso finish?
Thanks
Have always wondered what the Renaissance wax could be used for (I have seen it in Lions catalogue also).
Just wondering what makes it different from Liberon wax which seems to leave residue & streaking.
Will order some on my next order Monday.
Thanks again for the suggestions

Re: How to protect pure gesso finish?
Sorry to bump an old thread but I've been experimenting with spraying ripple paint with good results but I'm wondering if it needs sealing? If so what would be the recommended sealant? I've got a very nice smooth marble finish with the ripple paint after a gentle sand and a polish with a clean cloth so would want to preserve it. I know traditional gesso is porus so will pick up dirty etc but not sure about the ripple paint?

Bit of clear wax. Sorted.
You could give it a coat of this if you want it a bit tougher. Comes in Satin and Gloss as well.

Thanks wax it is. I might try spraying the varnish though as I seem to be spraying everything else....

Re: How to protect pure gesso finish?
I'm thinking off building a conservatory onto the shed. Spraying for the use of.

Re: How to protect pure gesso finish?
Why not just build and shed instead of a conservatory for a shed
Re: How to protect pure gesso finish?
What build a shed onto the existing shed? That would be an extension.
